Lesson Look
What to Expect
A lesson with Joan is a quiet, attentive conversation between teacher and student — conducted largely through gentle hands-on guidance.
The Lesson
The First Lesson
Joan begins by observing how you sit, stand, and move. Through gentle touch and verbal guidance, she helps you become aware of the habitual patterns you carry — many of which you may never have noticed before.
Hands-On Guidance
Joan's hands are her primary teaching tool. Light, non-manipulative contact guides your body toward greater ease and length — not by forcing a position, but by inviting a release of unnecessary tension.
Table Work
Part of each lesson is spent lying on a padded table. In this supported position, Joan works with your whole body, helping you experience a state of rest and release that is often quite unfamiliar.
Chair Work
The simple act of sitting down and standing up is one of the most revealing activities in an Alexander lesson. Joan guides you through this movement repeatedly, helping you discover a new way of organizing yourself.
Verbal Instruction
Alongside the hands-on work, Joan offers clear verbal explanations of the principles underlying what you are experiencing, helping you develop the understanding to apply the technique in daily life.
Between Lessons
The real work of the Alexander Technique happens between lessons, as you begin to notice your habitual patterns in everyday activities — and practice the art of pausing and choosing a different response.
